Dentofacial Orthopedics
Whereas general dentists can provide orthodontic treatment along with other treatments for teeth like fillings, cleanings, crowns, etc. Orthodontists are concerned with the treatment of, which may be a result of tooth irregularity and/or disproportionate jaw relationships. Orthodontists work on reconstructing the entire face rather than focusing only on teeth.
The specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment improper bites and crooked teeth, which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as “dentofacial orthopaedics”.
Orthodontic treatment can be carried out for purely aesthetic reasons with regards to improving the general appearance of patients’ teeth. However, Dr. Biermann is qualified to work on reconstructing the entire face rather than focusing exclusively on teeth.
Training
Orthodontists are specialized dentists trained to diagnose, prevent and correct structural problems in patient’s teeth. More than a decade of education is required in preparation for this career. This includes four years of college, four years of dental school and two to three years of post-graduate orthodontics training, as well as extensive written and clinical certification and licensing exams.
